Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should we lodge our Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM)?

Usually at least one calendar month before the marriage date, and no more than 18 months before the date.

What documents do we need to provide?

Usually birth details plus photo ID, and if previously married, the divorce or death documents that show you are free to marry.

Can we get married on the Gold Coast if we live overseas?

Yes. There is no citizenship or residency requirement, but you still need to meet the Australian legal requirements and be physically present for the ceremony.

Do we need two witnesses?

Yes. Australian law requires two witnesses aged 18 or over to be present and sign the marriage documents.

Can we get married online?

No. Some paperwork steps can be handled remotely, but the marriage ceremony itself still has to happen in person.

What is a paperwork-only marriage?

It is a short legal marriage focused on the required wording, witnesses, signing, and registration rather than a full traditional wedding ceremony.

Is a celebrant-led marriage legally the same as a registry wedding?

Yes. The legal status of the marriage is the same when it is completed correctly by an authorised celebrant or through the registry.

Do we receive the official marriage certificate on the day?

No. You usually receive a ceremonial certificate on the day. The official certificate is ordered later through Queensland Births, Deaths and Marriages once the marriage has been registered.

Can the one month notice period ever be shortened?

Sometimes, but only in limited circumstances and only if a prescribed authority grants a shortening of time.

Can we change our name with the marriage certificate?

Usually yes, but the official certificate is the one that matters for most institutions, not the ceremonial certificate from the day.
